DANIEL MATSUMOTO | 四季 (Four Seasons)
Through 四季 (Four Seasons), I wanted to explore the ways in which people flow in and out of our lives. Using the lens of the seasons, the four films show different points in a relationship between two people, from its genesis at a cherry blossom festival to its end at a frigid train station. At least, that’s one way to look at it. Much like the seasons, I made the films to work as if in a cycle where you could begin at any time. You could begin watching the films in summer and see a burgeoning relationship mature before coming to an unfortunate end, until spring bring a glimmer of hope. You could begin in winter and see two people, torn from each other too soon, try to reconnect and have the relationship they once dreamed of. You could begin in fall and see two people who were once close have to come to terms with the new people they are after meeting once again. Each of these orders provides a different story, a different timeline of these two people’s relationship. Through this cyclical format, I don’t mean to imply that relationships simply continue in unending patterns. Instead, it enables you to see how the past affects the present. For example, how a history of closeness affects a first date. While the seasons always come back around, the land is fundamentally changed by all the seasons past. I believe that with people, it’s much the same.
